Laptop Computer Loan Policy

Laptop computers are available for use in the Library by Springfield Town Library patrons in good standing and 18 years of age or older. A Springfield Town Library borrower’s card and a current photo ID must be left with Library Staff before a laptop will be signed out. Users will inspect the equipment with Library Staff and sign a checklist indicating the laptop and all associated items are in good working order.

Laptop computer users must sign and have on file a Laptop User Agreement and abide by the Library’s Policy on Public Access Computers and the Internet, its Terms & Conditions of Use anditsWireless Internet Access Policy. The user assumes full financial responsibility for a lost, stolen or damaged laptop computer and any of the associated items signed out with it. Any problems with the hardware or software should be reported immediately to the Library Staff. The Library will not be responsible for lost data or for personal, financial, or credit card information while using a Library laptop computer under any circumstances.

Laptop computers are for in-Library use only and may not be removed from the building or taken into a restroom or other non-public area. The laptop computer is intended for the sole use of the person signing it out and may not be loaned to another. Laptop computers should never be left unattended. Library Staff will pick up any unattended laptops and the user’s laptop privileges will be revoked.

Laptop computers are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Advance bookings are not accepted, but a waiting list will be maintained if no other public access computer is available. Laptop computers may be signed out for 1 hour. Renewals must be requested in person with the laptop computer in hand and may be allowed providing no other user is waiting. Laptop computers may be signed out no more than twice in one day, for a maximum of 2 hours per day.

Laptop computers must be returned in person to Library Staff at the Public Service Desk no later than 30 minutes prior to closing. Users will remain present while staff checks the laptop to ensure all equipment is returned in good working order. Their Library card and ID will be returned when the user signs a checklist recording the condition of the laptop and all associated items.

An overdue fine will be assessed at a rate of $10.00 per hour (or fraction thereof) for a laptop computer returned after the time limit. Four hours after the laptop computer is due to be returned it will be reported to the Police as stolen and the user may be charged with theft.

Users may not install any programs or other software, or save files to the laptop computer hard drive. Documents and other user files should be saved frequently to a USB drive or other external storage device. All user files will be automatically deleted at the end of a session. The Library is not responsible for any loss or damage to a user’s data or media device due to hardware, software, electrical surge, battery/power failure or any other cause while using a Library laptop computer.

Volume must remain on mute unless headphones are used. Users are encouraged to bring their own headphones. Earbud headphones may be purchased for $1.00 from the Library.

The library will try to ensure good wireless reception throughout the public areas of the building, but cannot guarantee the availability or quality of the service or signal. Access to SMTP e-mail servers is not available through the Library’s wireless network; e-mail may be sent through web-based email services only. Printing is available through the Library’s wireless network at 10cents per page for black & white or 50 cents per page for color.
